    A Whole30 feels a little like rowing a 2k (except without the burning, all-over pain). I’m probably making it worse for myself because all I can think about is sugar (so mentally torturing myself) but also possibly because my diet right before the Whole30 was 100% sugar/pasta/grains/dairy etc. This is why this feels like a 2k to me:

    There’s the first 500m/week of Whole30:

    The challenge you were dreading feels laughably easy; what were you so scared of? This is simple, and easy, and feels like a massive win already. Finding new recipes to shop for and create is fun, and the food tastes great. The Whole30 rocks!

    stop“But you will be drinking, won’t you?” a colleague enquires, anxiously.

    I am marked as a joyless outsider at this year’s Christmas party. I am not drinking the cocktails proffered by numerous waiters in colourful wigs, nor am I taking advantage of the butternut squash risotto canapes, the sushi or the tiny bowls of salmon something. Instead, I am the person who decided to do a Whole30 in December and is sipping a tall glass of iced water. Idiot.

    paul christmasToday I am a sugar monster. As in all I want is sugar. And I’m cranky because I can’t have it.

    11am saw me sitting at my desk practically drooling over the thought of a Paul orange hot chocolate with a stack of mini star-shaped waffles, dusted in icing sugar and dipped in dark chocolate.

    I ate some salmon cakes and asparagus. (Gloomily, and slightly sulkily.)

    I eat a LOT of food.

    And I’m making pretty much all of it from scratch right now. It’s getting boring.

    Preparing food is like earning money; it takes a long time to do, and then you eat it and it’s gone. And sure, it was good while you were eating it, and there was the glow of satisfaction from making something yourself, but ultimately, wouldn’t it be awesome to have a personal chef?

    eggsMorning: Breakfast is proving troublesome. I am bored of eggs. Whatever I eat, I get hungry again 90 minutes later. I am eating SO MUCH FOOD.

    Midday: I am bored. I purchase Well Fed on a bit of a whim, reasoning I need some recipe inspiration.

    Evening: I am an ardent Well Fed admirer.¬†I whip up three recipes as soon as I get home from work. I am a (not very) secret mayonnaise addict, so mayo is first up. It turns out…practically perfectly. I grin like a wild thing, and run into the living room to show my housemate (who is a chef) my perfect mayo. He exclaims over how fresh it tastes. Back to the kitchen and I roast some cumin carrots. Then I get stuck into smooshing up some turkey mince with spices to make scotch eggs. I tell myself it’s vegetables and now raw meat. If it were raw meat, I might freak out. I make it through the smooshing part.
